Purpose: To verify clinical methods to screen visual-sensory abnormalities in amblyopia.
Methods: Twenty-two individuals with normal vision(15.6¡¾6.1(years)) and twenty-one those who are undergoing amblyopia treatment or have experienced on it(11.4¡¾4.4(years)) were involved in the present study. Methods such as visual acuity at far and near, monocularly and binouclarly accommodation, accommodative lag using MEM(Monocular estimate method) and stereoacuity were performed, and the data were compared between the groups. Also, the amblyopic group was divided as two groups such as anisometropic(refractive) and mixed(strabismic) amblyopia, and then the differences in visual-sensory abnormalities were compared.
Results: In comparison of those with normal and amblyopic vision, it showed statistically significant differences in visual acuity at far(normal vision: 1.0¡¾0.0, amblyopic vision: 0.53¡¾0.3) and near(0.99¡¾0.03, 0.43¡¾0.25), accommodative lag(0.78¡¾0.25, 0.63¡¾0.51(D)), and stereopisis(32.71¡¾6.90, 457.62¡¾320.47(sec of arc))(p<0.05), suggesting that four methods of visual function tests were available to screen visual-sensory abnormalities in amblyopia. However, comparisons of accommodation between monocularly and binocularly, and of the visual-sensory abnormalities between refractive and strabismic amblyopic groups were not significantly different.
Conclusions: The results showed that distance and near visual acuity, accommodative lag, and stereopsis tests are available to clinically screen the visual-sensory abnormalities in amblyopia, whereas the methods to identify the sorts of amblyopia were not suitable. Therefore, in treatment and analysis of amblyopia multifaceted clinical approach to amblyopia will be more feasible through the methods suggested from the study.
